Last Sunday I visited London. Visiting the capital of England gave me the opportunity to meet my long-term British friend Ben. We know each other from since we were about 14 years old. We had arranged to meet at Waterloo station, located just at the south side of the river Thames. Our first destination was the Imperial War Museum (IWM). It contains many relics and gives a lot of information about World War 1, World War 2 and warfare in general up to the modern age.
Originally we also planned visiting the HMS Belfast, a World War 2 warship that is permanently docked in the river Thames. However, since we ran into some unforeseen delays, we arrived too late to buy tickets to enter the ship.
So we switched to plan B. At the other side of the riverbank, near the Tower of London, you can make a guided river tour on the Thames. The touring vessel sails from the Tower Bridge towards the British Parliament and the Big Ben clock tower. Our guide was a skilled speaker who gave a very interesting presentation of this part of London.
After disembarking, we went on foot towards the Parliament and the Big Ben to take a closer look at these buildings. Unfortunately both buildings were scaffolded for renovation, so we could not see a lot of the clock tower. After taking a walk in the surroundings, we finished our stroll with going to the Pizzahut (yes, again, you probably have already noticed that I like eating pizzas). In the evening, after saying goodbye to Ben, I took the subway to arrive at the London train station where I could catch my direct train to Cambridge.
It is possible that Ben and I will meet each other once again in London during my residence in England. We can still visit then the HMS Belfast and some other interesting places. The capital is such a major city, that you can only catch a small glimpse of it in one day. Yesterday was the Duxford Air Show. A new blog post about this event will follow soon.
